Food and Clothes Drive for Sandy Storm Victims For Our CommunityOn Sunday, November 4th, Glen McAvoy along with other BTA members organized a food and clothes
drive for Sandy storm victims within our community. BTA members drove supplies to the Lighthouse Mission and Brookhaven Fire District even though there was a gas shortage at the time. The BTA Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
The Bellport Teachers Association (BTA) celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, October 4thwith a panel discussion that included local Hispanic leaders. The BTA welcomed Assemblyman Philip Ramos, South Country Board of Education President, Julio Morales, school social worker, Melissa Lopez, Spanish teacher, Oscar Norena, and Katheryn Martinez, high school junior. An audience of approximately seventy-five students, teachers and administrators were present to hear about the Latino-American experience of the panelists. Students had the opportunity to ask the panelists questions which helped them to understand how their experiences have shaped their political views. Dr. Koenig, South Country’s interim superintendent was also present, along with assistant superintendent of curriculum, Linda Rozzi. Dr. Koenig added to the discussion by sharing his own families’ migration story. The BTA finished recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month with a celebration that included food and dancing at the newly opened Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Bellport Area. BTA members Wendy Palladino, Camille Masem and Courtney Cerrone made and served authentic foods such as marillo arroz con gandules. Community members came to eat, enjoy a free Salsa dance lesson and watch a performance by semi-professional team members of the Rhythmology dance group based out of Westbury. Wendy Palladino of the BTA commented that the “…two events recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month were a huge success. The people who participated in the discussion panel, as well as in tonight’s celebration are amazing people. They serve as role models in their communities and have made the Latino people of this community very proud.”
